Advanced Professional
Scrum Product Ownership

Taking product development to a higher level within the Scrum method, from 6 aspects (‘stances’) that focus on communication skills: The Customer Representative, The Visionary, The Decision Maker, The Collaborator, The Experimenter and The Influencer

The standard in agile product management

Agile Product Management is a fantastic, but also complex field. While a Professional Scrum Product Owner training is a good starting point, the role goes beyond the Scrum Framework. In the Professional Scrum Product Owner – Advanced training, we look at the Stances of the Product Owner: How do you become an effective visionary, customer advocate, researcher, decision maker, collaborator and influencer? This training is an absolute must for anyone who has gained their first experience as a Product Owner and is ready to make even more impact.

Who is Professional Scrum Product Ownership suitable for?

The PSPO-II is particularly suitable for advanced Product Owners and Agile Product Managers (for example, who work within a SAFe organization). This training is also suitable for when you want to help Product Owners grow, for example as a Scrum Master or manager. During the training, a lot of team work is done on cases. By sharing your experience, you learn together and from each other how you can best deliver value. In concrete terms, the training does not go into how Scrum works in principle, or the differences with a plan-driven approach (read waterfall), but rather on how you can be even more effective in your role as Product Owner.

How is the training structured?

The training follows the 6 stances of the Product Owner

1. The Customer Representative
Focused on helping others (e.g. developers) understand what customers need, what their challenges are, what their pains and benefits are. From this perspective, the Product Owner tends to explain how our work impacts customers, users and business processes.
2. The Visionary
Clearly communicating the product vision, strategy, business goals and objectives to all relevant parties. A visionary Product Owner tends to focus on the future, on changing the status quo, and helping people see what could be, rather than what is.
3. The Collaborator
Engage and work closely with the various stakeholders and Scrum Team(s). A collaborative Product Owner tends to support people in their own discovery process, whether it is defining goals, clarifying PBIs or analyzing customer needs.
4. The Decision Maker
This helps the stakeholders and the Scrum Team to keep the time-to-market short, by keeping the decision-making time short. Every day, all kinds of decisions have to be made. Some can be delegated to the Scrum Team or stakeholders, some has to be picked up by the Product Owner himself.
5. The Experimenter
By formulating a hypothesis, explaining what we know AND what we don't know, by seeing much of the work we do as experiments, rather than 'fixed' work packages. The Experimenter understands the need to try new things, to explore, to innovate and therefore to experiment.
6. The Influencer
Who helps stakeholders to focus on the product vision, strategy, goals and objectives. Influencing stakeholders and the Scrum Team is a difficult but very important task. The Influencer uses effective communication, negotiation and influencing skills to get people on board with the cause.
